Photographing babies: Now that's a skill.
Posted by Mary

Babies are everywhere. No, really, they are. Everywhere I go somebody either has a baby or two, or they're about to go into labor.

So, when times get tough and you need to earn some extra cash (without losing your sanity), a few tips might help you out with this extra market. (Everybody wants baby pictures!)

This is what I came across today:
Baby Photography: Photographing Babies Without Losing Your Mind

Most importantly: BE PATIENT! Babies are very sensitive, they can almost always tell if you're tense or becoming agitated, so take a deep breath. If you're calm, there's a better chance that the child will be as well.

Remember, it takes time.

Or you could always do it the easy way and wait until they fall asleep.

Not so sure about wifi cameras...
Posted by Mary

Samsung has officially released the word of its ST80 digital camera, the latest soon-to-be hit (or so it seems). Seemingly ideal with its sleek design and wifi capabilities, this camera is taking small and convenient to a whole new level.

Can you imagine sending your photos to your email right from your camera, or to your facebook without all the hassle? It's basically what any camera phone can do, just with better quality.

It has 3X optical zoom, a 3" touchsceen display with 720p 30fps H.264 video recording capabilities.

Concerns:
1) Samsung: How good are their cameras? I've only owned one phone, but the screen on that wasn't too great.
2) Touchscreen: Does it have to be synchronized all the time like touchscreen phones?

What do you guys think about this news? Worth looking into, or just another product on the shelf?

There is a monthly Flickr photo contest with a giveaway of a FREE FULL copy of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3.

Worst case scenario: you don't get it.
Best case scenario: you do.

All you have to do is log on to Flickr, upload your best photo (according to the theme of the month), and post it on the contest thread. But make sure to read the guidelines; there is a 600-800 pixel requirement!

Small cameras are still the craze.
Posted by Mary

It seems that everybody has a small, pocket-sized camera in their possession; heck, even my 5-year-old niece has one!

With all the competition in mind, the camera companies have shifted from affordability/availability to quality (since the options have maxed out interest with so many sizes, functions and colors).

According to a Reuters article, Canon is striving to produce a small high-quality camera, for those of us who are on-the-go and want our spontaneous shots to be worth it.

Canon hopes these cameras will increase sales. I hope these cameras will increase the public standards of a good shot :).

It will be interesting to see how they market the item...either as a step-up from the PowerShot, an extra pocket camera for the pros, or both. No specs available as of now, but I'll keep you informed.

Unique shots on an online magazine site
Posted by Mary

My job rocks. I get to look at pretty things all day. If only everybody else were so lucky ... Wait, why can't we all look at pretty things all day?

Art:Mag an online magazine (artmag.wordpress.com) has some awesome shots that could be both decorative as a photo, or decorative as a great new design technique for your space.

Check this out:

Magazines for walls? That's different. And awesome.

And how about this for a live sculpture:

What makes these shots interesting is the energy that everybody put into them. Kudos Art:Mag, you've caught our interest over here in Ohio.

Need a new gadget?
Posted by Mary

Sometimes you just need a pocket-sized camera for the casual moments in life—after all, it's a bit silly to ALWAYS have a camera strapped around your neck (no matter how cool you look).

So if you're a Nikon person, you may be interested in reading this review on the latest Coolpix (Sample shots and specs included, free of charge). The author seemed to be pretty impressed.

Not so fun if you're a Canonite, but we'll just have to wait for the next Powershot to compare...

Here are some tips for fine art photographers. Maybe it will be motivational...
